Remember who reads it

At most companies, a committee that has never watched you work reads a short document and decides in minutes. Your justification has to make a busy stranger confident, fast. That means skimmable structure, criteria mapping, and proof — not a wall of prose.

What to include — and what to cut

Include
  • A claim: you already operate at the next level
  • Each rubric signal, explicitly met, with evidence
  • Initiatives with impact and scope, linked to design docs or data
  • Corroboration: advocates, outcomes, peer support
Leave out
  • Ambition language — "I really want this"
  • A task history with no mapping to criteria
  • Unsupported claims with no link or witness
  • Hidden weaknesses — omitting them tends to backfire

How to prioritize

  1. Map every claim to a written criterion — reviewers calibrate against the rubric.
  2. Lead with your strongest, most defensible evidence.
  3. Make it skimmable: short entries, links for depth.
  4. Name an honest gap and your plan — it reads as maturity.
