What to bring — and what to skip

Bring

  • Specific outcomes with numbers or scope
  • A genuine question about gaps, asked early
  • Patience — your manager often must build the case upward, which takes time

  • Bravado — "I clearly deserve this"
  • Personal need as the argument (bills, tenure)
  • A last-minute ask with no evidence
  • Treating a "not yet" as a closed door

If the answer is "not yet"

Don't just drop it. Ask precisely what would change the answer, get the criteria in writing, and keep documenting against them. A "not yet" with clear criteria is a roadmap, not a refusal.
